The first one delivered a 5 pound little peanut. I mean, this boy was CUTE. Unfortuneately, he already had a receding hairline, but other than that, he was adorable. You hardly knew you were holding a baby!!

The second - The mom had been pushing for about three hours. This darn baby just wasn't coming out. So we went back to the OR for a c-section. Well no wonder!! Out popped a TODDLER! TEN POUNDS FIVE OUNCES. I swear to you, I wanted to start curling her to work out my biceps. She was massive. And, as a result, was not quite as cute as that little five pounder...But, all babies are fresh from heaven, and therefore a joy, a wonder, and a miracle. In other words, you just HAVE to love them. This little girl's dad was 6'4", which probably accounted for a bit of the size. Andy, you better tell Anna to look out.... ;)

Where does the darn time go?

I keep thinking that my life is too boring to write anything about. I don't think anyone will be that interested...too bad. I'm writing anyway. :)

Joe and I went up to Palm Desert last weekend. His parents were in town for vacation. We were both talking about how much we love that we can just pack a small bag and take off for the weekend. I think we're gonna go up to Santa Barbara this weekend. Hooray for road trips!

Work is going really well. I've had a couple emergency situations in the past month, which have shown me how much I've learned so far. It's a lot!!

Wedding plans continue. I'm taking it task by task. I think if I try to take on too much at a time, I'll get way too overwhelmed.

What I'm looking forward to most in the coming months: Going to Michigan for Andy's wedding, and meeting "Bun"!! My bestest friend in the whole world, Katie, is due April 16th. Right now she's got the cutest little belly. I only hope I get to be there for the big event!! It's kinda hard to PLAN these things... :)

Soundtrack o' the moment: "Hyperballad" - Bjork
"Le Monde" - Thievery Corporation
"Better Things" - Massive Attack
(feelin a little quiet)

yikes!!

 yikes!!
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
This is how I've felt lately...Sorry about the lack of blogs...

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas to everyone. I LOVE the holidays. I love the smell of it, I love the look of it, I love the sound of it, I love the taste of it, I love the touch of it... (I think that covers all the senses...) Basically, I really enjoy Christmas-time. Even though holiday shoppers can be rude, and it's a pain in the ass to sit in traffic, or a long line.
I've been deemed a "surprise destroyer" by my fiancee. (My fiancee! whoohoo!) I can't wait to get gifts AND give gifts. When I buy something for someone that I know they're going to love, I can't wait to see that lit up look on their face. It's a guilty pleasure, I know, but I can't help it.

But the holidays aren't just materialistic for me (in case you were getting worried). Aside from surprises, my next favorite thing is singing about Jesus' birth. How FUN is that? There are some truly amazing songs to be sung at Christmas. And to think, most of the songs we sing are OLD. People have been singing these beautiful songs for centuries...

So, the next time you get frustrated because you're stuck in holiday shopper traffic, just tune your car into the all Christmas music station, and hope they're playing "O Holy Night" (my fave)

God Bless.

WE'RE ENGAGED!!

 Becca & Joe
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
Hooray! I've really been slacking on the posts here. Is it because I think my life isn't interesting? Hardly. Is it because I'm lazy? Quite possibly.

Not much to report. I was training in the PACU at work. PACU (for those of you who don't know) stands for Post anesthesia care unit. It's where all our surgery cases go after surgery. L&D staffs the PACU at night, so I need to know how to recover all our c-sections. It was kind of boring to train in. Not as much action as L&D. But I know I'll be happy that I'm cross-trained. Sometimes it's a welcome relief to take a break from delivering babies.

Lili is getting huge! I'll post pictures later, but at her last vet appointment she was 17 punds! What a porker...She's a sweetheart. She's still very spoiled. Probably cause Joe and I pick her up every time we come home. She's kind of a cuddler.

Next week is already Thanksgiving!! Joe and I are headed to Atlanta for a family reunion with my mom's side. I'm WAY pumped. I haven't seen my relatives in about 6 years! Plus, no one has met Joe yet, and since I think he's so fantastic, I think EVERYONE should know him! :)

Well, off to clean our office. For free. Cause my boyfriend is the COOLEST boyfriend in the world. One of our local radio stations does what they call a "random act of kindness" every week. Joe showed up cause he heard they were giving out tickets, and he got on the guest list. And just who did we get to see? Death Cab For Cutie, whom I've been enjoying for some years now, and a new one to me, Pretty Girls Make Graves. Let me just say they rocked. R-A-W-K rocked. Pretty Girls had the most animated bassist I've EVER seen. And let me tell you friends, I have seen a number of good bassists. I am definitely a new fan.
Death Cab was everything I remembered them to be. I saw them a few years ago. They're one of those bands that I kind of forget about, then I go through some of my old music and I'm reminded of their genius. They just make me want to groove. And they make my hips shake. Whee.

Shaka dat ass.

Getting big!!

 Lili shoulder
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
Our puppy is getting big, but she's still small enough to curl up on Joe's shoulder...one of her favorite places to be. It's pretty humerous to see him carrying her around like this. Don't worry, it doesn't happen TOO often. But she's still a pretty spoiled puppy. :)
She's getting big, and she's also getting a lot smarter about where it's appropriate to "do her thing". Thank God. I think my life will be a little more sane as soon as she gets everything figured out.

In other life events...work is going really well. I haven't written much about it, because everytime I sit down to write, I feel like I have too much to say about it, and too little time. I've been off orientation for almost a month now. I can't believe it! I feel a LOT more confident, and sometimes I actually teach other nurses new things! The most satisfying nights are those where I deliver a healthy baby and have happy parents. Last night happened to be one of those nights. I had an amazing couple who were having their second boy. Both are trainers at Sea World! (made me think of you, Laura) They were incredible people. The dad actually got to help deliver! The doctor let him glove up, and had his hands over the dad's, and he got to pull the baby out. It was really a touching and awesome delivery. The kind where I thank God for what I do...

Well, it's time for this nurse to get some zzz's...ta!

TOO cute.

 Melis and Evie
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
How could I not post this adorable picture? I think it was a culmination of stress of a new job, stress of a new puppy, stress of a new place, stress of finding new friends...basically I was stressed out. I let it all pile up until I was a bawling mess. Joe (bless his heart) sat and listened while I voiced my stresses. I think it's really hard for him to not be able to automatically fix things for me. And this was definitely one of those situations where I just needed him to listen. We talked for awhile, then he went to take Lili for a walk. I still needed to vent though...

I called my mom. My mom is t-h-e s-h-i-t. She has this amazing ability to be completely compassionate when I need her to be, and then as soon as I've started to calm down, she puts a little edge on it and tells me what to do. I don't always agree with what she's telling me to do, but it's great to have someone help you think through your problems. It makes them seem not so scary. My mom and I have a FANTASTIC relationship. I tend to creat little dramas for myself, and she's always been there to talk me back down from the clouds. Most of the time, the best remedy she has is a hug. It's gotten a little harder since I'm so far away to give those hugs. But you know, I can still feel what they're like when she says she wishes she could give me one.
I also love that Mom and I have merged into an adult relationship. She's still very much my mom, but we're able to talk about things on a different level. I like to think it's because I'm so mature and have experienced more of life in the last two years... :) I don't know what I'd do without her though. Who else is ALWAYS there?

I love you Mom!!

Too lazy...

Sigh.....I would really like to sit down and write a post, but alas, I'm about to go off to work. Lili is enjoying living with us. Her favorite game so far is to play catch down the hallway with Joe. We have a spindly ball that we throw to her, that unfortuneately is a little too big for her. Sometimes she drops it on the way back to the living room, and doesn't notice, and she gets to Joe all excited for him to throw it again...hmm, she's not too smart yet. But she DEFINITELY has potential.
She's fun, except when it's come time to poop/pee. Noooot quite grasping the concept yet. We're crate training her, and it took her a little while to get used to it. I think I got maybe one hour of sleep the second night. The rest of it was spent in bed listening to the various cries and puppy barks that Lili was creating for herself...But, like I said, each day is getting better. I'm enjoying her puppy-ness, but I can't wait till she's old enough to take on walks and stuff.

Other than Lili, I'm almost done with orientation at work. We're technically supposed to get 6 weeks of orientation, but I think I'm going to extend one more week. I might as well take advantage of the extra time, just to give my confidence a little boost. It's going really well, and I continue to learn amazing things about child birth. Stories of preemies to come...

Off to the land of nod. There are babies to be delivered tonight, and screaming mom's to calm...my work is never done... :)

HOLY TIRED

Oh. It's been awhile. I'm working the night shift, so my circadian rhythm is a little f-ed up right now. I sleep during the day, get up around 4:30, go to work at 6:30, then go back to bed again around 8am. I just got off a particularly long stretch of work. It's going well though. I'm still learning a lot, but my confidence is increasing daily (nightly?).

I have today and tomorrow off, so I think Joe and I are going to see Garden State tonight. I first saw a preview for this movie when I went to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It intrigued me because I have always of Zach Braff and Scrubs. Now that trailers have been out on tv it's sparked my interest even more. The soundtrack sounds kick ASS as well. I've spent some time this morning perusing the web and found Zach's blog. Take a peek. He's funny. I can't wait to see the movie!!

Soundtrack o' the day:
"Let Go" - Frou Frou
"Such Great Heights" - The Postal Service
"Love Will Come Through" - Travis
"Say My Name" - Destiny's Child (gotta love the sistahs)

Memories of Sandy's...

 the boys on the beach
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
This is a picture of my going-away bonfire in Hawaii. Dave, Andy, Ryan, Josh, and Joe are seen here, singing and playing music. We are incredibly drunk at this point in the evening. I think this was taken at about 4 in the morning. We'd been partying all night on the beach. It was truly a magical time. It definitely goes down as one of my favorite memories of Hawaii. We used to go down to the beach about once a month to have a bonfire, drink beer, play music, etc.
Sometimes I really miss Hawaii. It was such a different time in my life. I'm so glad I took advantage of the opportunity to experience life in a completely different context. I'd like to say that I came out of it a completely different person, but I think I'm the same in a lot of ways. But I learned a lot about myself, which, I think, is more important than making changes.
Now I'm in San Diego, working a big girl job, and making enough money to live comfortably and also pay the bills. I feel really good about the where I'm at with myself right now. I feel like I've gotten a better toe-hold on the important things in life, and when I think about the future, I'm not nervous about making ends meet. It's pretty nice! Same old Becca, but a lot smarter about what she wants in life. :)

This is my dad.

 dardy
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
I haven't written lately. Sorry bout that. Getting used to night shift. Here's a picture of my dad. He's the shit. Which is a good thing. And he's the bomb. (Also good) He teaches me all sorts of helpful things. Like how Hawaii gets it's power (ever heard of the trans-pacific cable?!), and how to treat your children (always a closed hand...). Basically, he's a really smart dude who makes me laugh. Sometimes he can be a major butt-head, but mostly he's easy-going, fair, smart, and loving. Which is partly why I'M so damned cool. ha! The other part I owe to my mom. She'll get her own tribute later, but all I can say right now is I'm damn glad I got my looks from her!! I'd make a pretty funny looking man... :)
Till next time! I would hate to leave my readers with something sad to read last, so here's a new blog (just for you Erin!).

So, on to something happy. My birthday is JUST around the corner! :) October 1st. Everyone mark it on your calendar. I will be 24 years old. 24 sounds like such a great age. I'm not exactly sure when it happens, but there is a time when your age sounding older is NOT a good thing. I'm still in that "Cool! 24 sounds much older than 23!" stage. I think this happens to people who know a lot more younger people. I have a lot of "older" friends (sorry Andy!), so I always sound young. That, and I have such a youthful nature...ha! I guess it helps to date a younger man too. Joe is ten months younger than me. Right now we're enjoying the two months that we're the same age. Not for long sucker!! :)

I hope that was happier. I thought it was. Other happy things to think about: the beautiful San Diego weather, a good glass of red wine (or three bottles...), great friends, chocolate milk (made with Hershey's syrup of course), waking up in the middle of the night and realizing that you still have three more hours to sleep, a really good steak, winning "girlfriend of the year" for putting the laundry away, buying a new cd and pulling it out of the case for the first time (I love that!), and that first sip of ice cold water after rollerblading for an hour...

The Kids

 The Kids
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
Just a little add on from yesterday's blog. I moved out to Hawaii last July, and although it was sad to leave home and all my friends, I knew I was going to a place that was exciting and new. And after a small bout of homesickness, I was able to relax, have fun, and not miss home TOO much. It helped that I was meeting awesome people, had a fun job, and was able to play a lot. So, there I was, enjoying my island paradise life, when suddenly I get a call from home. My bestest friend in the whole wide world, Katie, called to tell me she and her boyfriend Ben just got engaged. I was sooooo sooo excited. But painfully sad. You have to understand, Katie and I have been best friends our ENTIRE lives. We've always been there for each other for major events. We had our First Communion together, we talked about our first boyfriends, we managed to stay in touch even though we lived half an hour away, we celebrated the millennium together in the Dominican Republic, we were there for each other through Katie's diagnosis of bipolar, we've attended graduations, and (my most favorite) we've spent many, MANY long nights talking until we're so exhausted we crash. As we got older, these nights of talking developed into sitting around at Katie's dad's (Uncle Mike) house, drinking vodka tonics, and philosophizing about life. Truly treasured memories...
SO - I get the call from Katie about their engagement, and I could just picture everyone sitting around, drinking champagne, and celebrating. And I wasn't there. It hurt. But it was strange, because at the same time, I was so happy. BOTTOM LINE - I really wanted to be home. In a bad way.
Luckily, I was going home for Christmas, so I was able to attend their engagement party, and give my best friend a hug.
I have been feeling a sort of deja-vu this past week. Ben and Erin are now engaged, and again I find myself a world away. I don't get to be there for the hugs, and sharing the news with close friends and family. These are things I feed off of. I literally get a high from sharing my life with those I love. And sharing my life includes sharing the news of people I love. I do, however, take comfort in the fact that I have such awesome relationships with my fam, and I can call at a moments notice to talk. I can be involved in some things, like input on the bridesmaid dresses, and cheap alternative ideas to traditional practices.
And I'm "only" a bridesmaid in their wedding!! I'm the maid of honor in Katie's, and I have to help with that from a billion states away! Sigh...it makes me tired to think about it...If only time and money were more easily attainable...

These weddings are simply examples. There a hundred other things I miss about home - torturing my siblings, watching my sisters become women, the smell of coffee that mom or dad made (which DOES smell different than the coffee I make...seriously...), the sounds of the house, the change of season, beer(s) on the deck, talking to my brothers about what they're doing with their lives, telling my mom about my day (no matter how mundane it was), the smell of the chiminea, dad's stupid (but mostly funny) jokes and the way he always makes my gin and tonic just a little too strong :) ...... Home is so great.

WEDDINGS!!!

 Ben and Erin
Originally uploaded by rebecca_reichelt.
OK folks, it is officially wedding season for me. This past weekend, my brother Ben and his girlfriend Erin got engaged!!!! I'm super excited for them. My little brother's getting married!! Craziness...AND, I get to be a bridesmaid! Even better. Joe and I thought Ben and Erin would be totally game for a dual wedding, but apparently they're more the "traditionalists"...whatever. :)
So, that will be happening next September...and in the meantime I get to get pumped up about my best friend's wedding!!!!!!!! Katie and I have been best friends our whole lives, and she and her fiancee, Ben (lots of Ben's, don't get confused), are getting married June 18th. I have the TREMENDOUS honor of being her maid of honor. I'm so excited! Ahhh, love is in the air... :)
I'm sure there will be a couple more weddings next year to attend...and possibly star in... ;)

Yay! I don't even know how many weeks I've been working. That's sad. I'm having a lot of fun (for the most part), so at least it's not because I hate it. I've done a lot so far, but it seems like I have so much more to learn! I think the frustrating part about work right now is that I'm not with a preceptor yet, so I'm kind of thrown to the wolves everyday. I usually have a task to focus on (newborn assessments, deliveries, IV's, admissions...), but sometimes it's hard to find something to do. Mostly because I don't really know everyone yet, and I don't feel comfortable just barging into a room to ask if there's anything interesting going on. Of course there is! We deliver babies here for God's sake!
So, I tend to creep around until someone takes me under their wing for an hour or two. There have been some really awesome nurses who have been very welcoming. Once I start with my preceptor (August 21st), I'll actually get to see what a "normal" shift will be like.
I'm also going to see what the night shift is like! Yikes! I love the nightlife, but I usually spend the majority of my nights sleeping. It will be weird to sleep during the day, and work at night. I think it will be a good change of pace for a bit. And the coolest part is that I only have to do it three nights a week, since I work 12 hour shifts. Bonus!
One sucky thing, though, is that I'll be sleeping while Joe's at work, and then leaving soon after he gets home from work, then back after he leaves. :( What can you do though?
I am currently procrastinating from my homework. I'm taking a perinatal class for work, and we meet every Thur-Fri for, like, a hundred hours a day. Some of the info is interesting, some is repetitive, and some is just plain boring. It's a good class day if I don't feel like slitting my throat afterwards. hahaha! No, it's not that bad, I just like to be dramatic sometimes.
Well, back to reading I suppose. I don't have Joe here to distract me/keep me on track because he's volunteering at the Padre's game tonight. Golly, isn't he swell? He's such a do-gooder. I'm so lucky. I love you baby!!

Picture of me! I had my first day on the floor yesterday. WOW. I love my job. I saw five deliveries, and one c-section. It's so amazing! It's comforting to know that I'm going to love my job so much. I know there will be a day where I will hate it, and wonder what in the hell was I thinking, but for now, I'm basking in the glow of loving my decision.
Another cool part about my job is that I get to meet new people! Just listening to a new mix (one of six!!!), sent to me from some wonderful friends back home in Minnesota. Andy, Mojo, Dels...YOU KICK ASS. I must say, new music is one of my most favoritest things in the whole wide world. It's almost like going on vacation, except that you can do it in the comfort of your own home. And without the GI upset if you drink the water...uh (ahem), yes...well, anyway......
It is HOT HOT HOT in our apartment today. Actually, it has been all week. Joe bought some fans the other day, and that seems to be helping, but it's still really hot. We have AC, but let's be honest, who wants to shell out the cash just so you don't have to sweat when you're watching TV? Not us. Plus, we made it living in Hawaii without AC for God's sake! Although, I admit, I turn it on in my car. But just because it works, and I feel cooler (in both respects of the word).
My car, you ask? Yes, I have a car! Well, it's TECHNICALLY Joe's car, because he paid for it, and the title is in his name, but I drive it. And as soon as I start raking in all this phat cash I'll be making as a nurse, I'm going to pay for it and it will be MINE. It's a 1998 Honda Accord. It's white, with a tan interior. Very choice. It's a mix of a mom car, and a stipper car. Mostly because I think the girl we bought it from is a stripper. She was very nice. But very mysterious about her job...She was always in LA for "an audition"....hmmmm..........
I've been a working FOOL this past week. Had three days of orientation, then two days of perinatal class. WHEW! When you're used to not working AT ALL, that's a little exhausting! So now it's Saturday, and my only day off this weekend, so I don't feel like doing much. I have to work ten hours tomorrow....But I get to be on the unit doing newborn assessments!! YAY!!
Well, that's all for now. Again, I would like to thank Andy, Mark, and Kyle. I bow down to your extreme genius and incredible talent. KEEP ON ROCKING.

Simply for a friend...

Hello all. I created this blog simply to comment on a friends blog. Shameless, I know, but I also thought it would be kind of fun. See, I'm kind of at a crossroads in my life. I've just moved to San Diego from Honolulu via Minnesota...hmm, too confusing. Let me rephrase. I was born and raised in beautiful Minnesota. The born and mostly raised part being in Minneapolis. When I was 13, we moved to Lakeville (southern Minnesota). After school, I went to St. Olaf College (WAY southern Minnesota). After graduation, I moved to Honolulu, HI. I am a registered nurse, therefore I have the freedom to move pretty much anywhere in the country and have a guaranteed job. So I thought, why not Hawaii? Also, it didn't hurt that a very wonderful man lived out there, and I wanted to spend more time with him. My boyfriend Joe (the wonderful man) has been in the Navy for 5 years, and was stationed in Pearl Harbor for the past 4. We met working together at Bakers Square (corny, but true!), and became fast friends. He left for the Navy shortly after we met, but we remained close through letters, phone calls, and the occasional visit back home.
SO, I packed my bags, and flew west. I worked at Outback Steakhouse (yes, I spent a very LARGE sum of money to be a waitress) and had the ABSOLUTE TIME OF MY LIFE. I will never regret a day I spent in Hawaii. I grew and learned things about myself that I don't think I would have learned elsewhere. It also opened my eyes to a completely different culture. There I was, a VERY midwest girl, in the middle of aloha country. More about HI later........
Almost 2 months ago, Joe and I moved to San Diego. He was up for re-enlistment, and decided the only way he would do it is if he could get stationed out here, and be able to go to school. He got what he wanted, and here we are. I was recently hired at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for women. I am VERY excited to start my labor and delivery job. I will finally be doing what I have wanted to do for some time - nursing!!
I think that's enough for one day. It is late, and remember, I only signed on to comment on Andy's blog. Love ya stud!
Till next time.......
